When should in-die tapping replace a separate tapping operation?

Answer

In-Die Tapping in Progressive Die Stamping Updated: September 18, 2024 At Balford, we're always looking at ways to streamline manufacturing—cutting cycle times and trimming costs without compromising quality. That's what keeps us competitive as a fabricator. To that end, we've brought in in-die tapping technology, which is a real workhorse in progressive die stamping operations. Station sequence, strip carrier, pilot guidance, punch clearance, material flow, strip support and part transfer define whether a part runs repeatably. Balford's in-house toolroom designs progressive dies internally, working with established tool steel suppliers and TD/PVD coating partners. IN-DIE T...
  5. In-Die Tapping in Progressive Die Stamping | Balford
How the in-die tapping unit works The in-die tapping unit is a compact mechanism that threads the hole while the part is still in the die. It converts the vertical reciprocating motion of the press slide into the rotary motion of an extrusion tap, so the thread is rolled or formed rather than cut. T...
  6. Transfer Press Stamping vs Progressive Dies: Which To Choose
Station count in a progressive stamping die is a consequence of the operation list, not a target. Every separate action the part needs – pilot piercing, blanking, drawing, restriking, trimming, forming, in-die tapping, parting – normally takes its own station, so a part that combines sev...

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating

Need a DFM feasibility assessment for your project?

Send the engineering drawing (STEP or PDF) with the material grade, thickness and annual volume. Balford engineers then check it against the process window - draw ratio, wall thickness, tolerances, blank and tooling route - and come back with what is feasible and what is not. An answer on this page cannot replace that review.
