DFM Analysis from Your Drawing
Upload a drawing and get an automatic DFM pre-screen: what the drawing already tells us, which features carry manufacturing risk, and exactly what is missing before a firm quotation. The report downloads as a branded Balford PDF you can forward internally.
AI DFM analysis — what it can and cannot do
The pre-screen reads the drawing’s text layer: dimensions, tolerance callouts, material and finish notes, standards and quantities. It then applies engineering rules — draw severity, wall-thinning ratios, minimum radii, thin-material handling, tolerance capability — and flags anything that changes the process route or the price. It does not rebuild geometry from a scan, so an image-only PDF produces few findings and the report says so instead of inventing numbers.
Drawing analysis and engineering drawing analysis
From a vector PDF the screen extracts diameter and radius callouts, thickness notes (t=, THK), tolerance expressions (± and +/−), general-tolerance standards (ISO 2768, GB/T 1804, DIN 6930), surface-finish and heat-treatment notes, and quantity callouts. Title-block text is read as well, so part number, revision and material notes are usually captured.
Stamping DFM
Material below 0.3 mm is flagged for burr height, die clearance and handling sensitivity. Small radii below R0.5 are flagged because they concentrate strain and accelerate tool wear. Where the drawing implies a blanking or forming sequence, the report notes the checks an engineer will confirm: strip layout, die clearance, burr direction and whether an in-die tapping or trimming station is required.
Deep drawing DFM and deep drawing feasibility
Where both a diameter and a thickness are readable, the screen computes a thin-wall ratio. Around 40:1 and above it flags a multi-stage draw sequence; at 80:1 and above it flags an extreme ratio where wall thinning, wrinkle control and inter-stage annealing govern the process. Stress-relief or magnetic annealing is called out when DT4E or similar soft-magnetic material is detected, because the annealing schedule affects final magnetic performance.
Sheet metal DFM
Bend allowance, springback and hole-to-bend distance checks are listed as the items an engineer verifies for bent parts, together with the finish and heat-treatment route. Where the drawing references a general-tolerance standard, the report states which one it read so the drawing and the quotation are talking about the same tolerance class.
Manufacturability analysis and DFM risk analysis
The output is a severity-ranked list: Risk items change the process route or the tooling (for example a tolerance tighter than ±0.05 mm on a formed feature), Check items need engineering judgement, and Note items are context. Every finding explains what it means for the part, not just that a rule matched.
Frequently asked questions
Can the tool read my scanned drawing?
No. A scan has no text layer, so dimensions cannot be extracted automatically. The report will say so and an engineer reads the drawing directly. If you can export a vector PDF from your CAD system, the automatic pass works much better.
Does the report give a price?
No. It is a pre-screen: it tells you what the drawing already answers, what is missing, and which features carry manufacturing risk. Pricing follows the engineer’s review of the drawing, material, volume and finish.
Is my drawing kept confidential?
The file is processed to produce the report and is used only for the DFM review. Send an NDA request with the drawing if your project requires one, and we will sign before detailed review.
Which formats are accepted?
PDF, STEP/STP, IGES/IGS, DXF, DWG, ZIP archives and images (PNG/JPG), up to 20 MB. Native CAD files are reviewed by an engineer in the CAD environment rather than parsed automatically.
Prefer to send it straight to our engineers?
The pre-screen is a starting point. Send the drawing through rfq.balford.net and an engineer reviews material, tolerances and forming route before quoting. Related reading: deep draw capability, equipment and metrology list, what tolerances a drawn housing can hold.
