Focus processes: fine blanking and thinning deep drawing

How thin a wall can deep drawing achieve?

Answer

When a drawn housing leaks, the cause is nearly always upstream of the leak. Ask three questions in order: was the wall thickness uniform after forming, was the material the right grade and temper for the reduction, and was the sealing face made as a controlled feature? A supplier who answers only the third has not looked at the part. How to specify tightness on the drawing State the requirement, not the test.

The minimum wall thickness in deep drawing - also called the minimum drawable wall - is set by the material, the draw ratio and the corner radius rather than by one catalogue figure, and it is not a single number even on one part: it follows the blank thickness in the first draw, thickens slightly a...

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating
Next step. Send the drawing for a manufacturability review, or send the part data for a process and cost route.
