Which aluminium grades deep draw well?

Answer

304 austenitic stainless — first draw roughly 1.6 to 1.8, redraws 1.15 to 1.25. 304 work-hardens quickly, so the second stage meets a harder material than the first. Published tables that quote 1.9 assume a favourable thickness ratio, generous radii and a controlled grain size. Thickness ratio moves the limit as much as the grade does.

  2. Aluminum Stamping & Deep Drawing | Balford
Can aluminium be deep drawn to the same depth as steel? Usually not in a single stage. Aluminium's formability depends heavily on the grade and temper, so the same depth may need more draw stages, larger radii, or an intermediate anneal. The review tells you which before the die is designed. Which a...

Aluminium 1050, 5052 and 6061 — weight-critical assemblies; softer, so handling burr matters more. Thickness runs from 0.05 mm to 3 mm. Below roughly 0.20 mm the material is hard to handle and hard to keep flat, which is why thin adjustment shims are normally supplied as laminated sets. Above about ...

  6. Metal Fabrication FAQ | Deep Drawing, Stamping & CNC
What is deep drawing? Deep drawing forms a flat metal blank into a hollow part by forcing it through a die with a punch. Balford uses it for housings, shells, sleeves and tubes where a seamless, strong body is required. Deep draw capability . What are Balford's strengths in deep drawing? Forced-thin...

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating
Next step. Send the drawing for a manufacturability review, or send the part data for a process and cost route.
