Focus processes: fine blanking and thinning deep drawing
Ironing vs redrawing: what is the difference?
Answer
Each stage has to stay inside the material’s limiting draw ratio. When work-hardening closes that window, an intermediate anneal restores ductility before the next draw. Ratios fall after the first draw: second and later draws achieve less reduction than the first. A tall part is not simply a deeper version of a shallow one — it is a different route with more stations, more tryout and, once the material work-hardens, an anneal in the middle.

Ironing is not free: it needs an ironing die, a polished punch, correct lubricant and, where the total reduction is large, more than one pass with annealing between them. The ...

The radial gap between punch and die bore is the finished wall thickness - which is why wall thickness in an ironed part is a tool dimension rather than a process accident. Three consequences follow. First, the tolerance on the two diameters depends on the accuracy of...
- Ironing Instead of Turning | Replace Machining | BalfordCan ironing really replace turning? For parts whose critical features are the inside diameter, the outside diameter and the wall thickness, yes. Those three are formed by the ironing punch and die, so the part arrives with them in tolerance. Machining is still needed where the drawing calls for a th...

What an engineer still needs from you
- material and material condition (grade, temper)
- material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
- tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
- annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
- surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating
Next step. Send the drawing for a manufacturability review, or send the part data for a process and cost route.
