DFM Analysis for Stamped and Deep-Drawn Parts

Balford Engineering Team

DFM review is the step between receiving your drawing and quoting a tool. It answers one question: can this part be made reliably, at this volume, at a sensible cost — and if not, what has to change? Balford reviews drawings for stamping, deep drawing and sheet metal work before any tooling commitment.

What a DFM review covers

We work through the drawing feature by feature and record what each one does to tooling cost, cycle time and scrap risk:

Why it happens before tooling, not after

Almost every costly stamping problem is cheaper to fix on a drawing than in a die. A radius that is too tight, a wall that thins below specification, a hole too close to a bend line or a tolerance that the process cannot hold at volume — each one is a line change at DFM stage and a tool modification afterwards. The review exists to move those decisions to the point where they are still free.

How the review runs

  1. Send the drawing — PDF, DXF/DWG, STEP or a clear image, together with material, annual quantity and any customer-specific requirements.
  2. Engineering review — we extract the dimensions and tolerances, propose a route and identify the features that drive risk or cost.
  3. You get a written response — the proposed process, the constraints we see, the points we would change, and the tooling and piece-price implications of each option.

If the drawing is missing a dimension that decides the process, we say so rather than assuming a value. For fast indicative numbers, the online estimator gives a first pass; DFM review is the engineering answer behind it.

Frequently asked

Is DFM review free?

For projects we are quoting, yes — reviewing a drawing to say whether we can make it, and what it would take, is part of normal quoting. There is no charge for a manufacturability opinion.

What files can you work from?

PDF drawings, DXF and DWG, STEP/IGES models, and clear PNG or JPG images. A fully dimensioned PDF is usually enough; a 3D model makes volume, blank size and mass estimates more precise.

Will you tell me if my part is not economic to stamp?

Yes. If pressing is the wrong answer — at very low volume, or for geometry that cannot be formed — we say so and point to the alternative, whether that is machining, a different material or a design change.
