Soft Magnetic Material Selection for Solenoid Valve Gaskets and Washers

Published September 3, 2026 · Balford Technical Team

Does a Solenoid Valve Gasket Need to Be Made From a Soft Magnetic Material?

Direct answer: Not necessarily. Whether a gasket or washer needs soft magnetic properties depends on its function and position in the magnetic circuit. A gasket that seals a port needs sealing performance; a gasket that sits inside the flux path may need magnetic material. Function first, material second.

What Does a Solenoid Valve Gasket Do?

A "gasket" in a solenoid valve can perform very different jobs:

  • Sealing a fluid path against pressure and media
  • Spacing between components to set axial clearances
  • Positioning a component at a defined location
  • Magnetic separation — controlling where flux is allowed to travel
  • Structural support for an assembly

Each function imposes a different material priority. Assuming every gasket is a magnetic component is as wrong as assuming none of them is.

Components inside the flux path carry magnetic function; sealing components outside it do not.

When Does a Gasket Need Magnetic Properties?

A gasket or washer needs magnetic material when it participates in the magnetic circuit — for example when it is deliberately placed in the flux path as a magnetic separation or flux-guiding element. In that case permeability, coercivity and saturation matter exactly as they do for the housing.

When Are Magnetic Properties Secondary?

If the gasket primarily seals, spaces or positions and does not participate in the magnetic circuit, magnetic properties may be secondary or irrelevant compared with:

  • Sealing performance and pressure capability
  • Dimensional stability and thickness control
  • Temperature resistance
  • Chemical compatibility with the media

Specifying a magnetic material for a sealing-only gasket adds cost without adding function — the kind of specification error an engineering review exists to catch.

Which Soft Magnetic Properties Should Be Considered?

When a gasket or washer does carry magnetic function, review the same properties as for the housing: permeability, coercivity, saturation and magnetic interaction with neighbouring components. Thin stamped magnetic parts add one more consideration: the stamping process introduces edge stress and work hardening, so the finished washer — not the coil of strip — defines the magnetic behaviour.

Manufacturing Thin Magnetic Parts

Gaskets and washers are thin parts, usually stamped or fine-blanked. Dimensional control — thickness, flatness, burr condition — is often the dominant manufacturing requirement. Where magnetic function is required, the material condition and the stamping route must be reviewed together; where it is not, the magnetic properties are simply not part of the specification.

Final-Part Validation

Validate the finished gasket or washer against its actual function. If magnetic function is specified, test finished parts. If sealing is the function, test sealing performance. The shortest route to a specification error is testing the wrong property.

Balford's engineering reviews separate these questions cleanly for solenoid valve housing components and related precision parts — including washers documented in real programs such as the brass flat washers for solenoid valves. Representative thin magnetic and non-magnetic parts can be reviewed physically through the metal parts stock and samples library. The complete material framework, including when thin magnetic parts need soft magnetic behaviour, is in the soft magnetic material selection guide.

Engineering Takeaway

Ask what the gasket does before asking what it should be made of. Magnetic function earns magnetic material; sealing, spacing and positioning earn their own engineering priorities.
