Can you weld a copper coil into a stainless steel tank?

Answer

Yes. A copper coil welded into a stainless steel tank is an assembly we build, and the photo above is one we made.

The coil is formed to a controlled path and pitch, both tube ends are brought out through the tank wall, and the joints are welded (TIG) or brazed depending on what the copper-to-stainless transition needs. The unit is leak-tested before it ships.

This one was built for a precision equipment manufacturer in Changzhou, whose equipment is supplied to large battery manufacturers worldwide.

What the drawing decides: the coil outside diameter and pitch, the number of turns, the copper tube diameter and wall, whether the coil sits inside the tank or is wrapped around it, the joint design at each penetration, the leak or pressure requirement, and the tank material and wall thickness. Send the drawing with those on it and we will tell you plainly whether we build the whole assembly or only part of it.

Where the boundary is: we form the tube, make the joints and test the assembly. If the unit has to be certified as a pressure vessel, the design and the certification stay with your engineering team - we build to your drawing and test to the requirement you specify.

A tube assembly is more than a bent tube. It is a tube that has been bent or coiled to a defined path, has an end form that has to seal or connect, and often carries a bracket, a ferrule or a sleeve that has to sit in a fixed relationship to the bends....

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating

Need a DFM feasibility assessment for your project?

Send the engineering drawing (STEP or PDF) with the material grade, thickness and annual volume. Balford engineers then check it against the process window - draw ratio, wall thickness, tolerances, blank and tooling route - and come back with what is feasible and what is not. An answer on this page cannot replace that review.
