Deep drawing

How can I reduce cracking when deep drawing stainless steel?

Answer

Austenitic stainless such as 304 and 316L work-hardens as it is drawn, which raises the force needed for each subsequent stage and increases the risk of tearing at the punch radius. Deep parts usually require more stages and often intermediate annealing. Stainless also has a strong tendency to adhere to tool steel, so die materials, coatings and lubrication are selected to resist galling rather than simply to reduce friction.

① Poor die surface finish or fit: If the product cracks and the flange shows scratches, polish the die surfaces with a grinding wheel to get a smooth finish that lets material flow easily. ② Die gap too tight: ②the gap is too small: When the side wall shows a shiny, cracked surface, that's typically...

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating
Next step. Send the drawing for a manufacturability review, or send the part data for a process and cost route.
