Heat treatment and surface finishing

Which processes are outsourced, and how are they controlled?

Answer

Support Support Support: Who Does What, and How to Verify It Most of what a buyer needs to check before a first order is already published: who manufactures the parts, who collects the payment, which processes run in our own plant and which run through partners, and what documentation comes back with the goods. The short version Geometry-changing and mechanical work runs in our plant: tooling design and build, stamping and deep drawing, CNC machining, deburring, tapping, assembly and inspection. Heat treatment, plating, passivation and specialty surface finishes run through audited partners in our supplier network, under our documentation and change control. The supplier pages below name those partners and what each one is for.

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating

Need a DFM feasibility assessment for your project?

Send the engineering drawing (STEP or PDF) with the material grade, thickness and annual volume. Balford engineers then check it against the process window - draw ratio, wall thickness, tolerances, blank and tooling route - and come back with what is feasible and what is not. An answer on this page cannot replace that review.
