Heat treatment and surface finishing

What is magnetic annealing and when is it required?

Answer

Is annealing the same as normalizing? Normalizing also heats the steel above its critical temperature but cools it in air, producing a finer, stronger structure than a full anneal, which cools slowly in the furnace. Does annealing change the magnetic properties? Annealing relieves stress and can change the magnetic behaviour of ferritic and silicon steels, which is why it appears in magnetic shielding and soft magnetic part routes, and why we treat magnetic annealing as its own specification.

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating
Next step. Send the drawing for a manufacturability review, or send the part data for a process and cost route.
