How is tube bending calculated and what is the unfold length?

Answer

CNC tube bending uses numerically controlled machines to bend tube to programmed angles and planes with high repeatability. It is the right route for multi-bend parts where angle, plane and length must match the 3D model part after part. What is the difference between CNC bending and press bending? CNC bending programs each bend with controlled feed and rotation, so multi-bend tubes are produced in one setup with consistent geometry.

Three things govern whether a tube assembly can be built as drawn: the bend radii against the tube diameter and wall, the length of straight between bends, and the end form – a flare, a bead, a ferrule or a brazed joint. Bending is done on CNC mandrel benders so the bend sequence repeats; the ...
  6. K-Factor in Sheet Metal: What It Is and How To Set It
Is K-factor the same as the Y-factor? No, but they are related. The Y-factor scales the K-factor to account for springback and material behaviour: Y = K × π/2, so the two are used in different versions of the same bend allowance calculation. Why is my flat pattern wrong even though I used t...

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating
Next step. Send the drawing for a manufacturability review, or send the part data for a process and cost route.
