How is burr and edge quality controlled?

Answer

Do you provide blanks ready for forming or welding? Cut blanks are supplied with controlled dimensions and edge quality, ready for downstream bending, deep drawing, stamping or welding. Deburring and surface protection can be included. What edge quality can I expect?

  3. Burr Direction On A Stamped Part: How To Specify It
Which side does the burr form on? The side the punch exits. Because the burr follows punch travel, its direction is set by how the die is built and cannot be changed at inspection - it has to be decided before the tool is cut. Can a burr be removed by turning the part over? No. Flipping the part onl...

What an engineer still needs from you

  • material and material condition (grade, temper)
  • material thickness, plus the key diameter, height and wall thickness
  • tolerances, burr direction and the visual acceptance standard
  • annual volume - it decides whether tooling is single-hit, progressive or transfer
  • surface finish, and any secondary machining, annealing or plating

Need a DFM feasibility assessment for your project?

Send the engineering drawing (STEP or PDF) with the material grade, thickness and annual volume. Balford engineers then check it against the process window - draw ratio, wall thickness, tolerances, blank and tooling route - and come back with what is feasible and what is not. An answer on this page cannot replace that review.
