How to Solve Galling During the Processing of Deep-Drawn Parts in Die Manufacturing?

Balford Technical Team

In actual production, many factories have found that drawing dies are prone to scoring. How should this be addressed? And if drawn parts crack after processing, what remedial measures should be taken?

By changing the characteristics of the contact interface, adhesive wear can be reduced to achieve the best results when solving the above problems. Below, we will provide a brief analysis.

1. Regarding the raw material of the formed workpiece, surface treatments such as phosphating, spray coating, or other surface treatments can form a non-metallic film on the surface of the forming material, which can greatly reduce or eliminate scoring on the workpiece. This method is costly, requires additional production equipment and processes, and although it may sometimes yield some results, it is rarely used in actual production.

2. Adding a film such as PVC between the die and the forming material, or between the workpiece and the die, can sometimes also solve the problems encountered in deep drawing.

For continuous production lines, continuous film feeding can be achieved, but for stamping equipment with periodic production, an additional film layer is required for each production cycle, which affects production efficiency. This method is generally more expensive and generates a large amount of waste. It is best suited for small-batch, large-size workpieces. For applications with lower forming loads, lubricants or lubricants with EP (extreme pressure) additives can be added as a solution.

3. By changing the material of the punch and die, or through surface treatments of the punch and die, or by selecting appropriate die materials, the contact characteristics between the punch, die, and the drawn material can be altered. Practical applications have shown that this is a cost-effective method for solving drawing problems.

In summary, there are many methods to address scoring on the punch and die surfaces. The specific approach should be determined based on the workpiece size, force magnitude, production batch, and the type of material being processed.

Remedial Measures for Cracking of the Draw Rod

(1) Adjust the blank holder pressure to reduce the pressure.

(2) Adjust the drawing clearance to make it larger and more uniform.

(3) Adjust the die radius. If the die radius is too small, the part is prone to cracking; increasing the die radius can reduce the degree of cracking.

(4) Adjust the punch radius.

(5) Adjust the relative position of the punch and die.

The above content pertains to drawing dies. The drawing die used is called a drawing die, abbreviated as a draw die. A drawing die is a specialized tool required for mass production. It is a very important die; without a die that meets the requirements, it is difficult to perform mass drawing. An advanced drawing process cannot be realized without an advanced die. The drawing process, the die, the drawing equipment, and the drawing material constitute the three essential elements of drawing processing. Only when they are properly combined can drawing be achieved. We hope the above information is helpful to the readers.
