Metal Stamping

What are the precautions to take during the processing of metal stamping parts?

Balford Technical Team

I. Precautions for Processing Metal Stamping Parts

1. Cracking at the bottom of the part: The main causes of bottom cracking are poor material plasticity or the blank holder being pressed too tightly. Preventive measures include replacing the material with better formability or loosening the blank holder slightly.

2. Wrinkles on the side walls of the part: The main causes of wrinkles on the side walls are insufficient material thickness (thinner than the minimum allowable thickness) or eccentric installation of the upper and lower dies, resulting in excessive clearance on one side and insufficient clearance on the other. Preventive measures include replacing the material promptly and re-adjusting the die.

3. Scratches on the stamped part: The main causes of scratches on the part are sharp scars on the die or metal dust/debris falling into the die. Preventive measures include dressing the scars on the die and cleaning out the metal dust/debris.

II. Employees Should Pay Attention to Their Operating Procedures During the Stamping Process

1. Wearing slippers is strictly prohibited during work hours to prevent dies, iron blocks, and other objects in the workshop from falling and injuring feet. Team leaders, fitters, and die repair personnel must wear safety shoes during work hours.

2. During work, first check whether the equipment is operating abnormally. If there are issues such as unclear single-stroke or continuous-stroke operation, improper operation, or electrical faults, stop the machine immediately and promptly contact the duty technician for handling.

3. Inspect the equipment according to the items on the equipment inspection card, paying special attention to whether the guide and braking devices of the press are operating normally, and whether the single-stroke and continuous-stroke functions are clearly defined.

4. It is strictly prohibited for operators and die maintenance personnel to reach their hands into the die during operation.

5. No flammable or explosive items may be stored under electrical switches.

6. When installing the exhaust fan, operators are strictly prohibited from reaching their hands onto the motor to clean out scrap material.

7. Cut off the power supply, clean and wipe down the worktable surface, remove the die for maintenance and storage, and check the lubricating oil in the lubrication system every Monday on a regular schedule.

8. Male operators are strictly prohibited from keeping long hair, and female operators must tie up their long hair to prevent it from being caught in the flywheel.

9. Gloves are strictly prohibited when operating the drilling and milling machine; when using the grinder, wear a dust mask and safety goggles to protect yourself.

10. Take fire prevention precautions with white spirit, alcohol, cleaning agents, and other oils.

11. Clean up any oil spills promptly to prevent slipping.

12. When discharging material or manually feeding/removing blanks one at a time, dedicated tools (tongs, hooks) must be used. It is strictly prohibited to feed or remove blanks with bare hands. A single switch can injure your hand; you need a dual switch. The machine must not leak oil, otherwise parts may come loose. Do not expose power cables, as this is dangerous.

13. Wear gloves when packing packaging materials, scrap, and dies into boxes to avoid cutting your hands.

14. Be careful when pulling dies to prevent them from falling to the floor (the pallet truck must be lowered before pulling the die).

15. Operators are required to wear earplugs.

16. On the first day a new employee reports to work, the team leader must explain the safety operating procedures to him, and safety operating rules must be studied once every day of each week.

17. It is strictly forbidden to point an air gun at people, as it can easily injure the eyes.

18. When adjusting the machine, the machine must be set to single-stroke mode; continuous operation with the strip feeder is strictly prohibited.

19. It is strictly forbidden for operators to chase or fight in the workshop, to avoid falling, knocking over products, or injuring themselves.

20. When installing a die on a small punch press, first loosen the locking device of the guide rail, install the upper and lower dies, then adjust the guide rail stroke until it meets the requirements and lock the fastening device. In addition, when mounting a die on a high-speed punch, a single-stroke cycle must be performed. After locking the upper die, lock the lower die after the hydraulic pressure locks the die, and check again before production.

21. It is strictly forbidden for non-electricians to connect electricity or repair machines.

22. Wear gloves when stamping iron sheets and concentrate; otherwise, hands may be injured.

23. The use of foot switches on punch presses is strictly prohibited; all original foot switches on the machines must be removed.

24. If a machine abnormality is detected, first turn off the power, then promptly contact the duty technician for handling.

25. When cleaning and inspecting equipment, the power must be cut off before proceeding with the operation.

26. Check whether all equipment and materials are ready.
