Metal Stamping

Is Metal Stamping Work Dangerous?

Balford Technical Team

Are metal stamping parts dangerous? Is stamping dangerous? I often see people asking this question on hardware stamping forums and discussion boards. Why do people have this perception? This is mainly because the repeated stamping-related injury incidents have subconsciously led people to believe that stamping is a high-risk job. When people look for jobs, they have already discussed stamping, and their attitude changes. So, is stamping really that dangerous? Why do stamping accidents often result in injuries to workers' hands?
Hardware stamping parts.
In fact, stamping is not as dangerous as it seems. Stamping injuries have their causes. On one hand, it is due to the stamping factory, and on the other hand, it is due to the worker's operation. As long as both aspects are handled well, stamping is still quite safe. Today, based on our more than ten years of stamping experience, we will analyze how to eliminate the dangers of stamping for those who plan to work in the stamping industry.

  1. Things the factory should pay attention to.
In fact, stamping can be handled like logistics. The boss provides a vehicle for the driver to drive. At the very least, he must provide the driver with a fully qualified vehicle. The same goes for stamping. Let the factory operate the punch press. If the punch press cannot even be guaranteed to be fully qualified, how can safety be discussed? In terms of equipment, there are mainly the following requirements:
    Hardware stamping parts.
  2. The punch press operates well.
A good punch press is the foundation of safe production. The lubrication of the punch press must be normal. The copper bushings must not suffer excessive wear. The tightness of the brake should be within the normal range. The clutch and control system should operate flexibly. The bolts on all parts must not be loose.
  3. Install safety guards.
After installing safety guards, if the punch press hand or other items that affect safety enter the danger zone, the punch press will stop in an emergency. In the stopped state, the punch press cannot be started. The image below shows a punch press equipped with safety guards.
  4. The switch design is reasonable.
It is necessary to design two start switches and one emergency stop switch, and the two start switches must also be spaced a certain distance apart. The press can only be started when the stamping operator presses both start switches simultaneously. The emergency stop switch must not be too far from the stamping operator; otherwise, in the event of an emergency, the operator will not be able to stop the press immediately.
  5. The stamping die design is reasonable.
If the press is the primary factor for safe production, then the stamping die is the secondary factor. The production of stamping parts cannot be separated from the stamping die, so whether the stamping die design is reasonable plays a crucial role in safe production.
Whether loading and unloading are convenient and smooth will affect the safety of the factory during operation. When designing the die, it must be ensured that the factory can conveniently use tools to place and remove materials.
  6. Safety tools must be used.
During the stamping process, hands are absolutely not allowed to enter the die working area, which requires the use of safety tools to complete the loading and unloading work. Currently, commonly used safety tools include magnets, suction cups, and tweezers.
  7. Reasonable noise reduction measures.
If workers are exposed to the noise of the punching machine for a long time, their attention and mental state will continuously decline. Reasonable noise reduction measures not only ensure the mental state of stamping operators but also are responsible for their physical health.
    6. Establish safety management systems and press operation manuals.
The stamping factory must conduct regular safety training for stamping workers to instill the concept of safe production. Help stamping workers establish safe operating habits.
  8. Matters that stamping workers should pay attention to.
  9. Maintain a good mental state.
When operating the press, you must maintain a good mental state. If your mental state is not good, never operate the press. If you are worried, you must ask the factory for leave or be transferred to another position.
  10. Ensure concentration.
During work, you are not allowed to talk to others, nor are you allowed to look at your phone or make or receive calls. You must not engage in any work unrelated to operating the press.
  11. Maintain a calm mindset.
When encountering problems such as unloading or products stuck in the die, you must calmly shut down the machine, rather than shutting it down impatiently.
  12. It is strictly forbidden to put hands into the work area.
90% of stamping accidents are caused by workers putting their hands into the work area. Under no circumstances may hands enter the work area. This is the first guarantee of safety for stamping workers. Manual safety tools must be used.
  13. Dress appropriately.
When wearing work clothes, keep the collar and cuffs snug. For female workers with long hair, a work cap should be worn with hair tucked securely inside. Do not operate the press while wearing a skirt.
  14. Study the company's safety regulations and operation manual.
    (2) Regularly study the company's established safety production standards and procedures to build a strong awareness of safe operations.
Are metal stamping parts dangerous? Is operating a stamping press dangerous? As long as you strictly follow the requirements in daily production, stamping is not that dangerous. Just like driving a car—keeping the vehicle in good condition, maintaining a focused posture, and fully obeying traffic rules will keep you safe on the road. The same principle applies to stamping. Ensure the press is in good condition, operate it safely, and fully comply with the press operation manual to run the machine safely.
