Impeller Machining

Balford Technical Team

An impeller is all geometry and balance: the flow comes from the blade form and the life comes from the running fit. Balford machines impellers and impeller components for pumps, compressors and blowers, in prototype and series quantities.

What we machine

Impellers arrive either as a machined blank or as a formed shell that needs its hub and bore finished.

  • Open and closed impellers for pumps and blowers
  • Compressor wheels and impeller hubs
  • Impeller bodies machined from a formed or cast blank
  • Balancing discs and matching stationary parts

Process and tolerance

The bore and the hub define the run-out, so they are finished in one setup where the machine allows it.

  • Multi-axis milling of blade and shroud surfaces from the model
  • Bore and hub machined in one setup to hold concentricity to the outside diameter
  • Keyways, threads, set screws and balancing holes added as required
  • Surface finish controlled on the running and sealing faces

Materials

The material follows the fluid and the speed.

  • Aluminium 6061 and 7075
  • Stainless steel 304, 316L and 17-4PH
  • Brass, bronze and copper alloys
  • Titanium grades evaluated on request
