Special Alloys — Deep Drawing & Precision Machining

Special-alloy work at Balford is quoted project by project, not from a standing stock capability. Nickel-based alloys and titanium behave very differently from carbon steel and stainless steel, so the grade, formability, tooling and inspection route are reviewed before any commitment is made — and we will tell you plainly when a grade is outside what we have run. Production follows ISO 9001:2015 quality management on a 12,000 m² facility with 500+ machines.

Grades, chemistry and mechanical properties

What each grade actually is, what the standard guarantees, where it is used, and which grade to move to when the first choice does not work. Values are the standard minimums or typical annealed ranges; every lot is confirmed against its mill certificate.

Nickel, titanium and superalloys are chosen for one property that nothing cheaper survives; the forming cost follows that property.

Rm = tensile strength, Rp0.2 = 0.2% proof stress, A80 = elongation at 80 mm gauge. Chemistry is the ladle range from the named standard. Cold work, temper and heat treatment move the mechanical values, so the certificate for the delivered coil is the governing document.

What We Manufacture

Nickel-Based Alloy Parts

Grades we will evaluate on request include Inconel 625 and 718, Monel 400 and Hastelloy C276. Evaluation means we review material availability, forming or machining feasibility and tooling before quoting — it is not a claim of routine production volume.

Titanium Parts

Titanium grades TA1, TA2 and TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) are evaluated case by case, with springback and surface condition controlled through tooling and process settings rather than assumed.

Balford treats these grades as project-qualification work rather than stock, forming and machining trial parts on the same 25 t to 350 t press range used for production.

Engineering Considerations

How a special-alloy project is qualified

Because these grades are outside our routine production, every enquiry follows the same sequence before a price is given:

  1. Material availability. Confirm the grade, temper, thickness and whether the mill can supply it in the required form.
  2. Forming / machining feasibility. Draw ratio or machining strategy against the actual geometry, not a generic catalogue figure.
  3. Tooling. Whether the tool must be built specifically for this grade, and whether a soft tool is enough for the volume.
  4. Heat treatment. Annealing or stress relief between stages, arranged through audited partners.
  5. Surface treatment. Passivation, electropolishing or plating where the application requires it.
  6. Inspection. The characteristics that must be measured, and the gauging used to measure them.
  7. Project qualification. Sample parts, first article inspection and, where the customer requires it, PPAP documentation.

If the review shows the project is not a good fit for our equipment or experience, we say so at that point rather than after a purchase order.
