Pressure Sensor Housing Engineering

By Yu Lianbo — Tooling Design Engineer

Which material for a pressure sensor housing?

Aluminium where weight matters and the medium allows it, stainless steel where corrosion or temperature rules the application. The deciding factor is usually the sealing face and the thread, because those are machined after forming and must hold pressure without a gasket change.

Forming and sealing

The body is deep drawn to near-net shape and the interface is machined: sealing face, thread and any locating diameter. That split keeps the drawing operation fast and puts the tolerance burden where the function is.

Wall thickness

Pressure housings run thin relative to the diameter, so ironing and intermediate annealing frequently appear in the route, and burst or leak testing is agreed per programme rather than assumed.

Grade, wall thickness and tolerance are confirmed against the customer drawing. Batch heat treatment, slow wire cutting, passivation, electropolishing, plating, phosphating and coating are placed with qualified external processors and disclosed on the inspection plan. The quality system is ISO 9001:2015 with controls aligned to IATF 16949 requirements.
