Sensor Housing RFQ Guide: What to Send

By Yu Lianbo — Tooling Design Engineer

What should I send for a sensor housing quotation?

A 2D drawing, a 3D STEP or IGES file if you have one, the material and wall thickness, the annual volume, the tolerances that matter to your assembly, the surface treatment, the application temperature and the assembly method. With those in hand the engineering team can return a DFM review and a quotation - typically within 24 hours of a complete enquiry.

The ten items

  1. 2D drawing with dimensions, tolerances and the datum scheme.
  2. 3D model (STEP or IGES) where one exists - it removes ambiguity about the free-form surfaces and makes the DFM review faster.
  3. Material, or the service environment if the grade is still open - see the materials page for which grade suits which housing.
  4. Wall thickness and where it is measured, if it is critical.
  5. Annual volume and the first-order quantity - they decide whether a single-hit die, a progressive tool or a transfer route is the sensible answer.
  6. Critical tolerances: the two or three dimensions the assembly actually depends on. Tolerancing everything tightly costs tooling effort without adding function.
  7. Surface treatment - passivation, plating, phosphating, electropolishing, powder or liquid coating.
  8. Application temperature, which is what separates a 304 part from a 310S one on the exhaust side.
  9. Assembly method - press fit, braze, weld, thread - because it decides which faces need to be machined after forming.
  10. Target market and any standard the part has to declare, so the documentation package is planned from the start.

What comes back

A DFM review first: draw ratio, blank size, forming stages, thinning, wrinkle and tooling-cost drivers, reviewed before steel is cut. Then a quotation that separates tooling cost from piece price, with the incoterm stated.

Complete enquiries are answered within about 24 hours. If the drawing is still in development, send what exists - a marked-up PDF and the application description are enough to start the review.
