Stamping is a general term that encompasses a broad range of forming capabilities and industrial applications.
Deep Drawing Technology
Parts produced by metal stamping can range from 0.25 inches in diameter or smaller to very large aircraft, automotive, and appliance components.
Sometimes referred to as metal pressing, it is a cold forming or cold working process, meaning it is typically done at room temperature.
The stamping process is considered deep draw stamping or deep drawing when a part is drawn into a die cavity and the depth of the recess equals or exceeds the minimum part width.
Deep drawing technology is always accompanied by other forming techniques in the press. These other forming methods include:
Necking: Material is displaced to create a larger or smaller material diameter that extends beyond the original body diameter of a part, often used to create O-ring seats.
Piercing: A round or shaped piece of metal is cut from the drawn part.
Bulging: Bulging involves forcing a portion of the part diameter to protrude outward from the surrounding geometry.
Embossing: Material is displaced to form specific shapes in the part. Typically, an emboss should not exceed a depth of 30% of the material thickness.
Curling: Metal is rolled under a curling die to create a rolled edge.
Extruding: After a pilot hole is pierced, a punch with a larger diameter is pushed through, causing the metal to expand and grow in length.
Ironing / Wall Thinning: Ironing is a process to reduce the wall thickness of parts. Typically, ironing should not exceed a depth of 30% of the material thickness.
Reducing: A portion of the part is reduced in diameter to smaller than the main diameter.
Notching: A notch is cut into the open end of the part. This notch can be round, square, or shaped.
Ribbing: Ribbing involves creating a rib that protrudes inward or outward during the drawing process.
Side Piercing: Holes are pierced in the side wall of the drawn part. The holes can be round or shaped per specification.
Stamping / Marking: This process is typically used to place identification on a part, such as a part number or supplier marking.
Threading: Threads are formed onto a part using a wheel and arbor. Threaded parts can be produced within the stamping press in this manner.
Trimming: Trimming involves cutting excess metal, which is necessary to draw the part, off the finished part.
Marking: Process for adding identifications such as numbers, letters, or graphics to a part.
Holes: A shaped section of metal is cut from the drawn part using conventional extrusion or hole punches.
Dimpling: A localized indentation so that the head of a rivet or bolt can be seated flush with the surface of the metal.
