How are solenoid valve housings made?
Solenoid valve housings are made by deep drawing rather than welding or casting: a flat blank is drawn into a cup and then redrawn or ironed until the wall is thin and straight enough for the coil, which is what gives a seamless housing with no weld seam to leak or to disturb the magnetic circuit. The sequence runs blank, first draw, redraw and ironing, trim and pierce, magnetic annealing where permeability matters, and machining of the bore and sealing faces. Draw ratios run about 1.8 to 2.0 in low-carbon steel and 1.6 to 1.8 in stainless steel, so a deep housing takes several stages and stainless normally needs an anneal between them. Wall thickness is a gradient rather than one number, so the drawing has to state where the wall is measured.
